Course Equipment FAQs for Freshers

  • I've sent you an email or Facebook message but haven't heard back.
    • We do our best to reply to messages promptly but leading up to and around Freshers we receive a lot of emails and as we are all students too and out on placements all summer, it can be tricky getting to everybody.  We generally get similar questions every year so please check the website carefully as the answer is almost certainly there somewhere.
  • When should I place my order?
    • As everybody seems to leave ordering equipment until the last possible minute, we strongly suggest you order as soon as possible to make sure you have all the equipment you require - the longer you leave it the greater the chance we will have run out.  If you fail to order by the deadline, unfortunately we won't be able to guarantee your equipment will be ready for when you need it.
  • Can I place an order after the deadline?
    • You are welcome to place an order with the SU Shop at any time; however, we make deadlines to ensure we can fulfil orders by an agreed time (in this case Freshers Fair) if you place an order after a deadline, we cannot guarantee when we can get your order to you?
  • Can I exchange my item if I order the wrong size?
    • Yes, we are happy to exchange items that are the wrong size.  The only exception are custom embroidered items such as boiler suits, and polo shirts.
      • How do I know what size to order?
        • We try to include size guides with all our products.  These should give you a good indication.  If the item you need is custom embroidered we strongly recommend visiting us at the Freshers Fair or during Shop opening hours to try before you buy.
        • Do I really need all the items on the list?
          • We try hard to indicate what is essential now and what can wait a bit.  We are students too, and we know the cost of equipment can really add up.  The most important thing is to have a lab coat ready for the start of term and to order a boiler suit (if you are on a BVetMed course) by the deadline.
          • Are green embroidered boiler suits really compulsory?
            • These were introduced at the start of 2014 so are quite a new requirement.  The requirements are also a little different for some of the older students so you might hear different things about these.  They are now compulsory and you will eventually need two, but for now, you can get away with one if you are concerned about saving money.
            • Do I have to buy my equipment from you?
              • The only thing you must buy from us is your boiler suit as it is embroidered.  We do our very best to be competitive with our pricing but it's not essential to buy from us if you would prefer to shop for your other items elsewhere.
